February 11: Safer Internet Day

Safer Internet Day (SID) is a globally recognised event that promotes safer and more responsible use of online technologies, particularly for children and young people. First introduced by the European Union's SafeBorders project in 2004 and now coordinated by the Insafe Network, this day unites millions of individuals, schools, organisations, and businesses around a single goal: to make the internet a safer, more inclusive space for everyone.

Human Risk Management: The Key to Staying Protected

Building safer online habits is key to reducing human error and protecting both personal and organisational data. Here’s how human risk management aligns with the principles of Safer Internet Day:

  • Think Before You Click: Recognising phishing attempts and suspicious links prevents accidental breaches.
  • Guard Your Personal Information: Oversharing online can expose sensitive data to threat actors. Regular reminders about privacy settings on social media and apps are essential.
  • Empower Positive Behaviors: Fostering a respectful and inclusive online culture can help reduce incidents of cyberbullying and social engineering, which attackers often exploit.

Every individual is part of the solution. Safer Internet Day encourages all of us to think critically about our online actions and their potential consequences.

The Role of Security Awareness Training

Security training and awareness programs are essential for fostering a safer online environment:

  • Phishing Awareness: Employees can learn how to spot fake emails or messages that attempt to steal credentials or sensitive data.
  • Digital Footprint Awareness: Educating individuals about the long-term implications of what they share online—whether it’s personal or company-related—helps reduce risk.
  • Password Hygiene: Training on creating strong, unique passwords (and using password managers) is a cornerstone of internet safety.
  • Encouraging Reporting: Employees and families alike should feel empowered to report anything suspicious online, whether it’s a phishing attempt or inappropriate behaviour.
