October 29: National Internet Day

National Internet Day is celebrated annually on October 29th to honor one of humanity’s greatest technological milestones—the invention of the internet. This date marks the anniversary of the first-ever message sent over the ARPANET, the precursor to the modern internet, on October 29, 1969. That historic moment, when researchers at UCLA and Stanford managed to transmit the letters "LO" (the system crashed before the full word "LOGIN" could be sent), set the foundation for the connected world we live in today.

National Internet Day is an opportunity to reflect on how the internet has transformed communication, commerce, and culture while also highlighting the importance of using it safely and responsibly.

Human Risk Management: The Key to Staying Protected

Human error is a major factor in internet-based attacks, but fostering awareness and building strong habits can mitigate risks. Here are some examples:

  • Recognising Malicious Websites: Training employees and individuals to spot fake websites or phishing attempts helps prevent credential theft and malware downloads.
  • Safe Browsing Habits: Encourage employees to avoid clicking on unknown links or downloading unverified software.
  • Using Secure Connections: Public Wi-Fi networks are a common attack vector—educate people to use VPNs and encrypted websites (HTTPS).

When individuals understand the risks associated with internet use and take simple precautions, they play an essential role in safeguarding themselves and their organisations.

The Role of Security Awareness Training

National Internet Day is an excellent opportunity to emphasise the importance of cybersecurity training and awareness. Key topics to include are:

  • Phishing Prevention: Help individuals recognise phishing emails and scam websites designed to steal credentials or sensitive data.
  • Securing IoT Devices: Teach employees how to secure smart devices that connect to the internet, as these are often targeted by attackers.
  • Social Engineering Awareness: Build awareness of how cybercriminals use manipulation tactics to exploit internet users.
  • Incident Reporting: Encourage employees to report suspicious online activities, such as unusual account behaviour or unsafe websites.

Training empowers individuals to use the internet as a tool for growth and innovation without falling victim to common threats.
