April 8: Identity Management Day

Identity Management Day, established in 2021 by the National Cybersecurity Alliance (NCA) and the Identity Defined Security Alliance (IDSA), is an annual reminder of the importance of managing and securing digital identities. This day focuses on helping individuals and organisations protect themselves from identity-related threats, including data breaches, account takeovers, and fraud. As our personal and professional lives become increasingly digital, Identity Management Day serves as a call to action to adopt better practices for safeguarding online accounts and sensitive information.

Human Risk Management: The Key to Staying Protected

Since human error is often exploited in identity-related cyberattacks, empowering employees with the right knowledge and tools can significantly reduce the risk. For example:

  • Avoid Credential Sharing: Train employees to understand the dangers of sharing passwords, even internally.
  • Beware of Phishing: Encourage vigilance against phishing scams, which are designed to steal login credentials.
  • Use Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Employees should be familiar with MFA and its importance in adding an extra layer of security to their accounts.

By equipping individuals with the knowledge to manage their own identities securely, organisations can greatly reduce their exposure to identity-related threats.

The Role of Security Awareness Training

Identity Management Day is the perfect opportunity to reinforce key concepts through security training:

  • Password Hygiene: Teach employees how to create strong, unique passwords and encourage the use of password managers to securely store them.
  • MFA Awareness: Educate employees on how MFA works and why it’s essential to enable it wherever possible.
  • Recognising Social Engineering: Help employees identify attempts to trick them into revealing sensitive information, such as usernames and passwords.
  • Least Privilege Principles: Train staff on the importance of limiting access to systems and data based on roles and responsibilities.

When individuals understand the value of their digital identity and how to protect it, they become the first line of defence against cyberattacks.
